Empowering Adult Learners in and around Newark

Nearly 30% of Newark’s 285,000 residents have not achieved a high school diploma—a rate three times the national average. All The Way Up is reversing this trend by empowering adult learners in Newark and Greater Essex County to achieve their High School Equivalency Certification. All the Way Up provides small group tutoring with volunteer and professional tutors to better meet the unique needs of each student. This individualized support results in about a 50% student retention rate, a much higher rate than in most traditional, large-scale group GED educational models.

Sarah Schwarz serves on the Board of Directors for Mrs. Wilson's Treatment Center for women in recovery from addiction/mental health disorders for nearly 3 years, running virtual events and more. Because we are non-profit, we depend on donations to keep our Treatment Center running. This May, we will finally be able to hold our amazing fundraising/networking event at the Park Ave Club in Florham Park on May 17th from 6-8:30. It's an incredible event at a prestigious location with amazing speakers, wonderful guests, great food and drink and opportunity for sponsorship and journal advertisements for all types of businesses.

Poor People's Campaign March on Washington

Poor People's Campaign Working Group invites all to join the June 18, 2022 Mass Poor People’s and Low-Wage Workers’ Assembly and Moral March on Washington. The event will be a generationally transformative and disruptive gathering of poor and low-wealth people, state leaders, faith communities, moral allies, unions and partnering organizations. It is not just a day of action. It is a declaration of an ongoing, committed moral movement to shift the moral narrative, build power, make real policies to fully address poverty and low wealth from the bottom up.

NEWS

From the Diocesan Convention...

The 148th Annual Convention of the Episcopal Diocese of Newark was held on May 7th at Calvary Church in Summit. St Paul's was represented by delegates and clergy. The theme of the event was Hallelujah Anyhow. In the midst of all that is going on, the churches in our Diocese continued to do God's work in the world and to find gratitude for the blessings we have received. We may not have had the convention that we wanted with Covid still lurking around (two days, rather than one, etc.), but we went ahead and made the best of it. Old friends were seen, reports presented, elections to Diocesan offices conducted and business attended to. The message from the bishop in her sermon was that after Covid, the church as we knew it has irrevocably changed, and it is up to us to rebuild and reimagine the church of the future.

Vestry Update

The work of the Transition Committee and the Vestry are nearing completion. Look for an announcement soon. Jed Evans, Treasurer, presented the financial report for the month of March. We are at full rent from all outside users. Expenses are down. Income is down as well. People not coming to church in person and the transition are the primary reasons for this. Color and carpet style have been approved and the project should proceed soon. Rev. Ellen reported that Christian Education and Youth Ministry need to be addressed. She would like to expand the Sunday Speaker Series and Concert Series to try to bring in people from the outside as well as our parishioners.
