Ministry Minute – What St. Paul Means to Me When Mary asked me to speak about what St. Paul’s means to me, a long list of issues flooded my old brain. But, since Mary had asked me to keep this “short and sweet”, I will focus on two that are at the top of the list. First, St. Paul’s is a SAFE PLACE for me. I have no doubt that the words “SAFE PLACE” mean something very different for everyone here today. In order to tell you what it means to me, I need to share a little Alan Serio history. When I was young teen…about 14 or 15, I decided to tell the world that I was gay.

Stewardship is about being grateful, responsible stewards of the gifts we receive from God. The tradition of giving back to God and to the church comes from the Biblical practice of “tithing,” which means to give back a tenth of our earnings to God (Numbers 18:26). The Episcopal Church sees stewardship as more than simply contributing money to the church; it’s also about contributing time and talents, and volunteering for ministry and mission. It’s about reaching out to build relationships from a perspective of abundance instead of scarcity.

Congregations that approach financial stewardship from a biblical perspective do not view the money Christians give merely as a way to pay bills. Rather, such congregations see financial contributions as a way to help people grow spiritually in their relationship with God by supporting their church’s mission and ministry with a percentage of their incomes. Instead of treating people like members of a social club who pay dues, we, the people of St. Paul’s, are followers of Christ who give unselfishly as an act of faithful discipleship.

Consecration Sunday is coming, November 19th!
During morning worship on Consecration Sunday, we ask that you prayerfully ask, “what proportion of my income is God calling me to give?” and then complete a commitment card. Following worship we will then enjoy a celebration brunch together in the parish hall.

Back-to-school backpack donations and blessings! While you’re back-to-school shopping for your kids, please add an additional gender-neutral backpack or other school supplies to your cart, and bring your donations, along with your child(ren) and their own backpack to 10am worship on Sunday, September 11th. Donations will be sent to the Diocese of Newark's Prision Ministries and shared with the children of incarcerated parents, and we will say a blessing over all of our students, backpacks and the school year ahead! All are welcome!
