Join us Sunday Sept. 16th after worship for anintroduction to the work of Janis Reiss and her book Flunking Sainthood: A Year of Breaking the Sabbath, Forgetting to Pray, and Still Loving My Neighbor.
Janis Reiss is like the rest of us that struggle with deepening our spirituality and relationship with God. In this funny, yet vulnerable memoir, Janis spends a year tackling twelve different spiritual practices in her quest to become more saintly, including fasting, fixed-hour prayer, the Jesus Prayer, gratitude, Sabbath-keeping, and generosity. While she plans for success, she embraces humility—not just at some of the practices, but at every single one!
As a community, we will be exploring one chapter at a time and trying these spiritual disciplines alongside Jana. Have you been interested in learning more about centering prayer, or a deeper sabbath observance? As we head into the Fall and structure returns — this is a great read for the start of a new year, when many of us try to adopt new positive habits and routines The honesty and sincerity in the writing of Jana Riess provide encouragement, inspiration, and laughter. If you would like to get a jumpstart on your reading, we will have 10 copies of the book available in the sanctuary on Sunday. Stay tuned for more details in September!
